Coccidiosis Prevention in Broiler Production

Coccidiosis, caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Eimeria, is one of the most economically significant diseases in broiler production worldwide. It damages the intestinal lining, impairs nutrient absorption, and opens the door to secondary infections such as necrotic enteritis. Because the parasite is ubiquitous in poultry houses, the goal is not eradication but effective, sustained control.

How coccidiosis undermines performance

Eimeria species invade the cells of the intestinal wall, multiply, and rupture them as they complete their life cycle. The resulting damage reduces feed efficiency and growth long before clinical signs such as wet litter or blood in the droppings appear. Sub-clinical coccidiosis — silent but costly — is often the larger economic burden.

Anticoccidials and vaccination

Two complementary tools underpin most control programmes: in-feed anticoccidials such as ionophores and chemical coccidiostats, and live coccidiosis vaccines that prime immunity. Rotation and shuttle programmes help preserve the effectiveness of these products by reducing the pressure that drives resistance.

  • Design a rotation or shuttle programme to slow the development of resistance
  • Keep litter dry — moisture accelerates sporulation of infective oocysts
  • Support intestinal integrity through nutrition and gut microbiota management
  • Monitor flocks with lesion scoring and oocyst counts to verify the programme is working
  • Maintain strict cleaning and disinfection between cycles

You cannot eliminate Eimeria from a poultry house — but with a disciplined programme you can keep it from eliminating your margin.

VPhS Technical Team

Conclusion

Successful coccidiosis prevention blends pharmacological control, vaccination where appropriate, and the management fundamentals of dry litter, good nutrition and rigorous hygiene. Regular monitoring closes the loop, confirming that the programme is protecting both bird health and profitability.
