According to market research agency RNC Pharma, in the period from January to May 2022 Russia imported veterinary medicines worth 15.6 billion rubles (customs-cleared prices including VAT) – a decline of 2.6% year-on-year in ruble terms. Feed additive imports moved in the opposite direction, growing 11.8% to a total of 19.3 billion rubles.

Within the feed additive segment, the increase in ruble value was driven mainly by products for non-productive animals, which grew 2.2 times year-on-year, while shipments of veterinary medicines for both farm and companion animals declined.

Despite the mixed picture in monetary terms, physical volumes fell for both categories: veterinary medicine shipments were down 4.3% to roughly 12.9 million packages over the first five months of 2022, while feed additive volumes fell 13.5% to 58.4 thousand tonnes.

May 2022 alone was not a strong month for the market – veterinary medicine imports grew just 1.5% in ruble terms year-on-year, while feed additive shipments collapsed by 36%. In physical terms, veterinary medicines were roughly flat (+0.2% in packages), while feed additive imports fell 47% in tonnes.

The geography of supplying countries changed only slightly: shipments arrived from 37 countries and transit regions in the period under review, compared with 39 a year earlier. The structure of supply, however, shifted significantly – China showed the strongest dynamics, with ruble-denominated imports up 3.7 times year-on-year. Supplies from China consist mainly of products from Chinese manufacturers, in particular Enduro and NKP, which are produced and shipped on behalf of the Russian company Vetpharmstandard. Poland also showed strong growth (up 2.1 times), though it primarily serves as a transit hub for products from seven different countries.
